Recovery from spinal and brain injury aided by exercise and rehab ends in world record attempt

Fitness helped Paul Barton survive being hit by a car head-on while riding a bike, and last week, after three years of recovery, he almost set a new world record — doing 1000 push-ups and 1000 dead lifts of 60kg in one hour and 23 minutes.

Mr Barton, a Marrickville man, said his love of training helped him recover from a shattered spine and brain injury sustained when he went through a car’s windscreen in 2014.

“I was placed in an induced coma for 12 days and couldn’t make new memories for 19 days (after the accident),” Mr Barton said.

“I had brain damage and woke up 12 days later with metal screwed into my back and a spinal fusion.
